Foreign citizens should have applied for and obtained appropriate visas before entering China unless they are visa-exempt according to certain agreements and regulations.
The scope and measures for issuance of diplomatic, courtesy and official visas shall be specified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Ordinary visas are divided into 12 categories and shall be marked with corresponding letters in the Chinese phonetic alphabet: C, D, F, G, J1/J2, L, M, Q1/Q2, R1/R2, S1/S2, X1/X2, Z1/Z2
China's Visa Authorities are:
?Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hong Kong / Macao
?Chinese embassies and consulates in foreign countries
?Other resident organizations abroad
All are authorized to process visa applications for entry into and transit through mainland China and the Hong Kong/Macao Special Administrative Region of China.
?The Ministry of Public Security and the local public security bureaus authorized by it
Responsible for issuance of visas at the port of entry, extension and change of ordinary visas, issuance of residence permit to holders of ordinary visas already in China.
?The Immigration Department of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region
?Macao Public Security Police Force Immigration Service
Responsible for matters relating to foreigners’ entry into and exit from Hongkong / Macao
